It's alive!

That's the moment I build for. I'm Anat Wax. I bring together storytelling, hands-on making and software solutions to create characters and experiences that feel alive. From the overall impression to the smallest reaction, I care about the details that make someone believe.

Based in Israel, I work with teams worldwide: remotely, with on-site visits when needed.

Working together

Joining your team on a project of a few months or one that runs for years, bringing creative thinking, programming and attention to detail.

Projects and consulting

A specific challenge

Help developing an idea, building an interaction or refining an experience, with attention to both the overall effect and the details that shape it.

A bit about me

Who you'd be working with

I started out in music, with opera training from a young age and a B.A. and M.A. in musicology focused on cognition: how people perceive sound. Then came eleven years running Israel's national sound archive, and five years as an automation developer at Red Hat. Through all of it I kept making things, fascinated by animatronics, the uncanny valley and plays of perspective, and Samuel is where it all came together.

I'm organized and curious, I follow through, and I care that everyone on the team feels heard.

Opera and musicology

Opera training from a young age. B.A. and M.A., music cognition.

Sound Archive Administrator

I administered the sound archive at the National Library of Israel, supervising technicians and student staff.

Software at Red Hat

Quality engineer and Python automation developer.

A lifelong maker

I've always made art and built things, fascinated by the uncanny valley and games of perspective. Samuel is the sum of everything I've learned along the way.

An example of my work

Meet Samuel

My animatronic raven brings together my interests in character, sound, movement and interaction. He's one example of how I approach making something feel alive.

Samuel will notice you. If you ignore him for too long, he'll let you know.

Make you feel there's someone inside.

"Hey Samuel!!"

One day my mother came to visit. She saw Samuel on my desk and greeted him, genuinely happy to see him. He wasn't even plugged in.

He wasn't moving or responding, yet she greeted him as someone who could appreciate the welcome. That's the feeling I build for: the sense that there's someone inside, even in stillness.

What I bring to a project

A feeling for the experience. The skills to help make it happen.

01

Story and experience

I start with what someone should feel when they encounter a creation. That guides the choices that follow, from its appearance and behavior to the small details that make the experience convincing.

02

Behavior and personality

I translate a character's personality into behavior, shaping how it acts and responds, with context and variation making it feel alive.

03

Sound into motion

My background in opera and musicology shapes how I convey emotion through sound and movement. I pay attention to phrasing, timing and pauses: when to move, when to wait and when to be still.

04

Characters that notice you

When a character responds to your touch, notices you and recognizes you, you walk away feeling seen. I combine face recognition, touch and sound to create those moments, because how a character makes you feel is a big part of believing there's someone inside.

05

Engineering that holds up

At Red Hat, I develop Python automation and test complex systems. I bring that same attention to testing, troubleshooting and maintainable code to my animatronics work.
